What started as a simple idea—to bring generations together through conversation and connection—is now earning statewide recognition.

The City of Dublin’s Teen Buddy Program has received a 2026 ServeOhio Award, honoring its innovative approach to building meaningful relationships and reducing loneliness through volunteer service. ServeOhio presents these awards annually during Global Volunteer Month in April, celebrating the impact of service and encouraging continued volunteerism across Ohio.

Through the program, trained teen volunteers are thoughtfully matched with older adults based on shared interests and life experiences, creating friendships that span generations.

“This program began during COVID as an effort to combat isolation, particularly among our older adult population. What we soon discovered was the mutual benefits to both teens and seniors,” says Director of Outreach & Engagement, Christine Nardecchia. “This brings to life another way of looking at a ‘connected community,’ supporting the mental and physical well-being of those involved. It builds promise, perspective and mutual benefit for all.”

The Teen Buddy Program gives teens an opportunity to make a difference while offering older adults meaningful companionship and connection.

Thanks to the efforts of Volunteer Coordinator Shannon Maurer, the program has remained intact with new matches each year. Residents interested in participating in the Teen Buddy Program—either as a teen volunteer or an older adult—can contact Shannon at smaurer@dublin.oh.us or 614.410.4446.
